SUMMARY:آبِ رواں Aab-e-Ravaan: Language Like Water
DESCRIPTION:May 2 to August 1\, 2026 \nLegacy Downtown | 630 Yates St.\nLekwungen Territory \nآبِ رواں Aab-e-Ravaan: Language Like Water explores the artistic practice of Farheen Haq\, an interdisciplinary artist born into an immigrant family with roots in Bihar\, India\, and Karachi\, Pakistan\, she now lives and works on lək̓ʷəŋən territory (Victoria\, BC). Through her work\, Haq returns to her parents’ experience and ancestral lands\, drawing on the Urdu poetry of Mirza Ghalib (1797–1869) as a source of connection\, memory\, and reflection. \nIn this exhibition\, Haq looks to water as a guide in relationship building and to understand the flows of migration; as well as tracing the fluidity of language through poetry. Her work moves like a ghazal\, where every droplet carries the meaning of reconnection. In آبِ رواں Aab-e-Ravaan\, Urdu becomes a living current\, flowing and shaping relationships. Like water\, it holds memory and connects seemingly distant lands and waters to the Salish Sea\, offering a space where identity remains in motion\, always shifting and creating new meanings. \nCurated by Anahita Ranjbar. \nThe opening celebration will take place on May 2\, 2026\, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. \n  \nImage: Farheen Haq\, Aankh Band ke Dekho (Close Your Eyes and See)\, 2022. SUMMARY:TD JazzFest 2026: Elysia Biro
DESCRIPTION:Raised in the wilds of Vancouver Island\, 26-year-old Elysia Biro (pronounced Eh-lee-sha Bee-row) is a technically gifted singer\, songwriter\, and pianist. A student of classical piano at age 4\, Biro began writing her own music at 13 while teaching herself how to play jazz by ear after being inspired by the genre’s improvisational free form. After receiving her diploma in classical piano from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto and graduating high school at age 16\, Biro earned her Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies for piano and voice before moving to England to complete her Master’s of Music degree at the University of York. \nCrafting her unique sound from an expansive fusion of genres\, Elysia Biro’s songwriting blends modern pop form and classical technique with jazz sensibilities. An expressive and introspective songwriter\, her warm\, soulful vocals reflect her journey through self-discovery\, love\, and introspection\, painting a compelling portrait of life as she knows it right now\, blossoming between seasons. Biro has quickly amassed a dedicated audience on social media through her captivating vocals and virtuosic transcriptions of jazz solos. Now based in Los Angeles where she writes\, records and produces\, Elysia Biro continues to combine worlds\, creating sonic sanctuaries all her own. \nFor more information/tickets\, visit https://jazzvictoria.ca/jazzfest-home/
