SUMMARY:VJS Presents: Brass Queens
DESCRIPTION:Brass Queens is a nine-piece female-led\, New York-based brass band that has been dominating the brass band scene since 2019. Inspired by the soulful sounds of New Orleans\, the Brass Queens’ band consists of one sousaphone\, drums (both line and set)\, two trombones\, one alto sax\, one tenor sax\, three trumpets and a whole lot of passion. Their songs are spiced with a wide range of musical influences including Balkan\, mambo\, film scores\, pop\, and classic rock. Becoming a fixture in the local music scene and dubbed “the hardest working band in town\,” the Queens gained a dedicated following through outdoor performances on the streets of Brooklyn. In February 2021\, Brass Queens released their debut EP Royal Street. In November 2023\, the band released their first full-length album titled Black & Gold\, and less than a year later\, their second full-length album and their first album of all-original music titled Hot Tub Sessions Vol. I. \nBrass Queens tour regularly across the USA and internationally\, including Canada\, with sold-out shows and performances at various events and programs including The Met Gala\, Brooklyn Bowl\, Good Morning America\, and Ottawa Jazz Festival. The band has developed a signature style that sits right at the intersection of the Big Apple and the Big Easy. The result is a nonstop party: a Brass Queens show will have you singing along to classic pop hits\, dancing your heart out to reggaeton\, and feeling like you’ve been transported to New Orleans’ Frenchman Street. They’re bringing New Orleans brass band tradition with a New York twist all the way to Victoria’s Wicket Hall this fall – get ready to dance! Alex Harris trumpet\, Ally Chapel saxophone\, Minerva Johnson trumpet/percussion\, Stephanie King trumpet\, Jenna Murdoch saxophone\, Stephanie Young trombone\, Heather Ewer sousaphone\, Ashley Baier drums

SUMMARY:Treasure Trove: the Cantigas de Santa Maria
DESCRIPTION:Bourdons brings the vibrant sounds of the Cantigas de Santa Maria to the stage. \nJust as archaeologists attempt to reconstruct entire communities from a few sherds of pottery\, the odd ancient coin and the faint residue of post holes in the earth\, musicologists and early music performers must contend with the rarity of original manuscripts and the primitive nature of early musical notation in their efforts to understand how music was performed in the Middle Ages. \nBut then there are finds like King Tut’s tomb\, or Sutton Hoo\, where the detail and quantity of artifacts give a wonderfully complete picture of a culture. \nIn the case of music\, one such golden hoard is the collection of songs known as the Cantigas de Santa Maria. They consist of over 400 songs in Galician Portuguese from the 13th Century that narrate entertaining\, often earthy and humorous\, stories of miracles both large and small rendered by the Virgin Mary. They tell us much about the beliefs\, culture and art of that time and place. Particularly important for modern performers\, they contain musical notation for the songs and detailed illustrations depicting musicians going about their craft. With these ancient manuscripts\, a stunning treasure trove of beautiful music is unearthed for us to enjoy today. \nImages from the Cantigas de Santa Maria \nThe tunes\, simple but beautiful\, present opportunities for a variety of settings and interpretations. That is what Victoria’s local medieval ensemble\, Bourdons\, will bring to the EMSI stage\, employing voice and the exotic sounds of medieval period instruments\, from vielles\, lute\, oud\, harp and gittern\, to recorders\, hurdy gurdy\, shawm\, medieval bagpipes and frame drums. \nMembers of Bourdons: \nArian Aminalroaya\, percussion\nLinda Donn – voice\, vielle\, recorders\nDouglas Hensley – lute\, oud\, gittern\, percussion\nGwendolyn Jamieson – voice\, harp\, hurdy gurdy\nWilliam Jamieson – recorders\, historical bagpipes\, shawm \nDoors Open at 7:00 pm.\nShow at 7:30 pm.
