SUMMARY:HERE & THERE: Paintings by Martin Osberg
DESCRIPTION:A collection of Martin Osberg’s painted compositions\, in oil and acrylic\, inspired by the land\, sea and architecture of the Southern Gulf Islands\, Portugal and Spain. \nShow runs February 17 – March 8\nTuesday to Sunday 11 am to 5 pm \nOpening Reception Thursday\, February 19\, 6-8 pm \nMartin Osberg has been painting for over 30 years. The most significant influences on his style have been the land and sea around Vancouver Island and the Southern Gulf Islands\, and the interesting play of light and shadow on buildings in Portugal and Spain. The series “Impressions of Iberia” started during a one month painting retreat in Portugal in 2017 and has continued to develop up to the present. \nThe painted compositions included in HERE and THERE showcase these two distinct influences and include works in oil and acrylic on canvas\, linen\, wood panels and archival oil paper mounted on wood panels. \nMartin Osberg has a studio above the Gage Gallery and will be in his studio painting for the duration of the show. Visitors to the gallery are invited to come up to his studio to meet and discuss his approach to painting.

SUMMARY:BEETHOVEN PIANO CONCERTO NO. 4 & TCHAIKOVSKY’S PATHÉTIQUE
DESCRIPTION:NICOLAS ELLIS\, conductor\nJAEDEN IZIK-DZURKO\, piano \nFlorence M. Tremblay: Les détours nécessaires\nBeethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major\nTchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 in B minor “Pathetique” \nPoetic and passionate performances are in store from two emerging Canadian talents. In September 2024\, Salmon Arm BC-born pianist Jaeden-Izik Dzurko took top honours at the Leeds International Piano Competition—the first Canadian to do so since Jon Kimura Parker won in 1984. Nicolas Ellis is Music Director of the Orchestre National de Bretagne and Principal Guest of Les Violons du Roy. He served as Artistic Collaborator of the Orchestre Métropolitain and Yannick Nézet-Séguin from 2018 to 2023. The intriguing title of Florence Tremblay’s work\, Les détours nécessaires (The Necessary Detours)\, alludes to the world of video games but also suggests that sometimes\, in life\, the most successful path is not always the necessary or obvious one to take.

SUMMARY:Dominique Fils-Aimé
DESCRIPTION:Fils-Aimé’s music “bursts at the seams with style and intricacies\, clearly garnering more than a single description. Liberation is written all over… brazenly and unabashedly\, through the sound of lush soul.” – Exclaim! \nSoulful singer-songwriter\, JUNO Award winner and Polaris Music Prize finalist Dominique Fils-Aimé is a rising star in the global music scene. Born and raised in Montreal to Haitian parents\, Fils-Aimé’s music is infused with the history of Black music in North America. Her latest release\, Our Roots Run Deep\, came out September 2023 on Ensoul Records and won the JUNO for “Vocal Jazz Album of the Year.” A listen to her previous albums\, Nameless (2018)\, Stay Tuned! (2019)\, and Three Little Words (2021) makes it clear that Fils-Aimé has both the powerful “tour de force vocals” (Toronto Star) and the imagination to meet her musical ambitions. Our Roots Run Deep is no exception\, providing a vibrant\, lush addition to her repertoire in which her voice transcends in a multitude of emotional and stylistic directions. \nFils-Aimé has appeared on the same bill with Allison Russell\, Melody Gardot\, Diana Krall\, Ibrahim Maalouf and more. With a magnetic stage presence inspired by Nina Simone and Martin Luther King Jr.\, she moves from vintage jazz to trip-hop to sultry soul jams\, even touching on reggae and R&B with confident style. She last appeared in Victoria in 2024 in an unforgettable performance and will release a new album in February 2026! Experience her ascendant journey\, as Dominique Fils-Aimé becomes one of Canada’s most poignant\, soul-stirring artists. Don’t wait – get your tickets early! \nPresented by the Victoria Jazz Society

SUMMARY:Island Chamber Winds presents: Still Bravely Singing
DESCRIPTION:Still Bravely Singing is a concert about birds\, but it’s really about using birds to look at humanity: to reflect on our history\, grapple with our present\, and imagine our future. \nBirds have long been used as symbols and metaphors\, especially for ideas like freedom and hope. Music and poetry can allow us to collectively engage with what’s happening around us\, and perhaps help us make better sense of it all. And there’s certainly a lot happening all over the world these days that is difficult to confront. \nWhile the music on this program is heavy at times\, it also includes moments of great joy\, optimism\, and even humour. We hope you’ll join us in exploring this beautiful and thought-provoking music. \nProgram:\nErin Lilliefors: Flight\nClare Howard: Above the Final Fields*\nStephanie Berg: We Are Not Birds*\nMaya Angelou: Caged Bird\, performed by Tenyjah McKenna\nOlivier Messiaen: Abime des Oiseaux\, performed by Le Lu\nCaroline Shaw/arr.\nDanielle Fisher: and the swallow\nIngrid Stölzel: Echo of the Past*\nClément Janequin/arr. Ben Litzcke: Le Chant des Oiseaux \n*Canadian premieres from the Women in Harmoniemusik commissioning consortium. We’ll be the first Canadian ensemble to perform these three pieces\, which were all written in the past year. \nFeaturing: \nBen Litzcke\, conductor\nLaura Andrew\, flute\nThomas Bauer\, flute/piccolo\nKristen Cooke\, oboe\nAndrew Montgomery\, oboe\nLe Lu\, clarinet\nRebecca Hissen\, clarinet/bass clarinet\nJean Poynter\, horn\nKaren Hough\, horn\nHeather Fisher\, bassoon\nJohn Myatt\, bassoon\nAllan Thorpe\, contrabassoon\nTenyjah Mckenna\, actor \nAll tickets are Pay-What-You-Can\, and we encourage you to choose an amount that fits your budget. https://www.zeffy.com/en-CA/ticketing/still-bravely-singing-birdsong-for-our-time \nThis concert is generously sponsored by Wildwood Health & Performance\, Long & McQuade Musical Instruments\, Thrifty Foods Hillside Mall\, and Fernwood Coffee. \nThe Baumann Centre is accessed by a flight of stairs or a lift and has gender-neutral accessible washrooms. Parking is limited so we encourage you to carpool\, bus\, bike\, or arrive with enough time to find a parking spot. \nThis concert takes place on the territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən People\, now known as the Songhees and Xwsepsum Nations.

SUMMARY:JEREMY DUTCHER IN CONCERT
DESCRIPTION:SEAN O’LOUGHLIN\, conductor\nJEREMY DUTCHER\, piano / vocalist \nSinger-songwriter\, composer\, and musicologist Jeremy Dutcher is the first artist in history to win the Polaris Music Prize twice. The classically trained tenor is a member of the Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick and his debut album\, Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa\, (2018) helped to bring the endangered language of the Wolastoqiyik people to new generations. Dutcher’s followup album\, Motewolonuwok (2024)\, featuring a mixture of original songs in English and Wolastoqey\, continues to preserve a language while fostering inclusivity\, reclamation\, and reconciliation. Unapologetically playful in its incorporation of classical influences\, full of reverence for the traditional songs of his home\, and teeming with the urgency of modern-day resistance\, Jeremy makes his VS debut with works from both of his award-winning albums.
