On the Frontlines of Hate
A Strong Cities Network Conversation with Local Leaders on Preventing and Responding to Hate and Disinformation in Times of Global Crisis (followed by a reception)
7:00 – 9:00pm
October 30, 2024
Royal BC Museum
675 Belleville St, Victoria BC
On the occasion of the first-ever Strong Cities Network conference focused on cities in western Canada and the western United States, which will convene elected leaders and other officials from more than 30 cities in these regions for two-days of sharing and learning in Victoria, please join us for an evening event at the Royal BC Museum on October 30th.
The event will feature a live-streamed conversation among mayors and other local leaders attending the Strong Cities conference about the rising levels of hate their residents and communities are experiencing in the midst of global crises, including migration, wars in the Middle East and the Ukraine, climate change, and largely unchecked disinformation and conspiracy narratives.
After Katherine Keneally, the Director of Threat Analysis and Prevention at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, provides an overview of the online threat environment in western North America, elected local leaders will share lessons learned, challenges, and good practices in their efforts to confront these increasingly cross-border challenges.
Confirmed speakers:
• Mayor Marianne Alto (Victoria, BC)
• Mayor Amarjeet Sohi (Edmonton, Alberta)
• Mayor Chris Roberts (Shoreline, Washington)
• Vice-Mayor Doreen Garlid (Tempe, Arizona)
